Tl dr make the three provinces in the title Occitan (again) In border regions it may give both those three provinces are not. The native names that Wikipedia gives are also evidence of a sort you'll find it lists Gascon names of people and things from Gascony but for Cahors, Bergerac, Limousin, etc. Gascony is pretty distinct, and while often considered Occitania, is the most clearly delineated 'occitan_selon_Pierre_Bec.jpg (e.g.) Historically, also, they were part of entities such as La Marche or Guyenne Guyenne though represented as the Gascon country had in fact its base in Occitan areas around Cahors and Bergerac before it took Gascony, which was Basque influenced (hence the name, in fact switch the B or G at the beginning of the word) so even non-linguistically there's not much of an argument. ![]() If this is in fact not motivated by historical accuracy but rather by gameplay or something, Limousin, Auvergne and Provencal would all be better candidates for splitting off into their own, as indicated by above dialect maps. This source even marks the Bergerac region as a separate subdialect of mainstream Occitan (brageiragues)Ĭahors is today part of the French region of Occitanie ![]() (Cahors is about 115km north of Toulouse, Bergerac is on the Dordogne further inland) (one of the most expansive Gasconies I've ever seen and Limousin is far off, Cahors north and then east a bit of Toulouse, Bergerac way east of like Bordeaux, like halfway to the longitude of Limoges) (Cahors is on this map Lot-et-Garonne is around where Bergerac is) Cahors) which Gascony should not come near. It's never been Gascon, though at times it has been part of various entities called Aquitaine, which is about the closest you get.Ĭahors and Bergerac have less distinguished histories/cultures but they are still clearly outside the pale of anything resembling Gascony, being in fact closer to even the Massif Central (esp. Limousin is the most important a major dialect of Occitan is in fact Lemosin, and you will be very hard pressed to find a map of Occitania that does not note the fact. The provinces in southern France, Limousin, Cahors and Bergerac are currently Gascon culture IMO, they should be Occitan. So, I don't know if this was recent, or if I've just never noticed before (I would think that I would have though).
